We talked quite a bit about cons and events, so that's where I'm starting with our recap.
Doctor Who Day (Wed July 30) Artists welcome to sketch at Collector's Corner in Midland for a fun-filled day of Doctor Who. Please contact Andy for more info.
Barnes and Noble Event: Marvel Day (Sat Aug 2) Marvel stuff! MCC will be there sketching starting at 2pm. Sorry, I don't have a link or more information for this event.
Barnes and Noble Event: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Day (Fri Aug 8) Exciting ninja activities for kids ages 5 to 10. MCC will be there sketching starting at 5pm, the event officially begins at 7pm. This is the same day that the new movie will premier.
Barnes and Noble will be carrying the Anthology! We are working on an in store signing event to occur during the third week in September.
Plans for September signing (Sept 13) The biggest and most important thing to remember about this event is that if you worked on AV1 you should plan to BE THERE at Coy's to sign about a million copies of AV1 (or like 450 or whatever. That's almost a million.) Please feel free to bring your personal work to sell if you have any on hand.
GrandCon (Sept 19-21) We still have available 2 Sunday passes for anyone who would like to represent the MCC at our booth.
Grand Rapids Comic Con (Nov 21-23) The MCC will not have a booth at this event.
Detroit Fanfare (Feb 2015) We are looking for four people to represent the MCC at our booth. More information will be shared as it is made available.
Motor City Comic Con (May 15-17 2015) We will have four full 3 day passes for the MCC booth - we are taking volunteers to represent us in the Motor City. Jason Jimenez is our first volunteer. This is a huge event, in 2013 there were over 30,000 people that attended this event.
A Note About Cons:
We also discussed the sorts of things that happen at cons and what to expect. An artist representing MCC should feel free to bring prints, sketch covers and sketch cards to sell - make sure to list your prices and be organized! The big thing we discussed is that since you are there representing MCC at an MCC booth that artists selling things and taking commissions would would give MCC 20% of sales. For credit card sales we would have an MCC account and give the artists payouts. As we figure this out we will make all the information available to you. Also be thinking about merch! Stuff to display and sell at cons, like T-shirts, prints, stickers, pins and cool stuff. We are looking into MCC labeled sketch cards and an MCC backdrop for cons and events.
Upcoming date TBA events:
Sketch Cover Auction in December: Sketch covers will be provided. We are taking suggestions for the artistic theme (last time was Batman). This will be a two week auction rather than a one day deal.
Children's Hospital Sketch Event: Sketching for kids in the hospital to make them happy, brighten days and lift spirits. This could be tough for some people, these kids have serious medical issue, many are battling cancer. The whole point is to make them feel better so remember to smile!
Then we moved on to Kickstarter awards and assigning artists for the sketch cards etc. We discussed the new editorial board for AV2, art and script guidelines and deadlines.
Assigning artists to handle different sketches for the Kickstarter backer awards.
If a backer specifically requested an artist for their award Travis will be emailing you the details. We still have plenty of people who didn't make a specific request, so please feel free to volunteer for award projects! These should be finished by the beginning of September so they can be sent off to the printer at the same time as AV1.
Other award projects that were discussed and assigned:
Bookmark project: Josh Andres
Playing card project: (3.5x2.5)
Sean Seal - back design
Frankie Lang - Ace of Spades
BJ DuVall - Jack of Somethings Four of Hearts (8/14/14)
Jolyn Ohlendorf - Jack of Diamonds
Patrick Humphreys - Ace of Hearts
Josh Werner - Jack of Spades
Quite a few new artists to work on AV2 - welcome! We have AV2 scripts coming in right now to be reviewed by the newly established editorial board. The board includes: me (Julie Harrell-Dennis), Travis McIntire, Sean Seal, Steve Sharar, and Tim Kenyon. We are reviewing scripts to ensure they meet our submission guidelines and to do basic edits with grammar and continuity. Editing stuff. If we need you to make a change or if we have a problem, expect to hear from me.
Deadline for script submission is September 1st! Once we have our scripts in and edited we will assign artists if that has not already been done. We will be setting deadlines for outlines, sketches, colors and lettering. Deadlines aren't suggestions, as indicated by the name they are serious business, so please keep yourself organized and on track. Ask for help if you need it!
Artists Guidelines:
As was mentioned before we need artists to submit their art as either a properly prepared digital file (talk to Sean Seal if you aren't sure) or using pencils or paints or what-have-you on 11x17 bristol board (comic book board). You can get the board at Coy's in Saginaw for 50¢ per page. You are not allowed to submit your work any old way anymore, like on a napkin. When you are working keep the finished product in mind. So keep in mind size, resolution and scale. Keep your work as clean as possible because this is for print. It all has to be digitized and homogenized and then sent off to the printer.
Remember the File Preparation Seminar? It is looking like that will be turning into a webinar - like a youtube video or something. As soon as I have it I will post it on the side bar for easy access.
File Preparation Seminar: At some point in July Sean Seal will be doing a tutorial at Coy's Comics in Saginaw on how to properly prepare your files for printing. For AV2 we are requiring that all art submitted is a properly prepared digital file or on 11x17 bristol paper. The size of bristol paper selected is because when it is scanned to the computer it already has the correct aspect ratio and will not need to be digitally edited. You can purchase the proper paper at Coy's (if you face a financial hardship, please contact us and we can get you the paper at low to no cost, and totally confidentially.)
